Dr Edward de Bono has defined THINKING as “THE OPERATING SKILL WITH WHICH INTELLIGENCE ACTS UPON EXPERIENCE”. If IQ is the innate horsepower of a car and KNOWLEDGE is the fuel, then THINKING SKILL can be equated with driving skill. Only a skilful driver can make optimum use of a car’s potential. Because of this realisation, many schools for the exceptionally gifted are now using Dr de Bono’s Thinking programs in a deliberate attempt to avoid the “intelligence trap” which occurs when a high IQ is not accompanied by effective thinking skills. Dr de Bono believes that good thinking does not occur naturally. He believes there is a need to teach thinking. One should realise that it is never too early to be taught this most fundamental of human skills. The increasingly complicated future will undoubtedly challenge anyone to come up with clear and constructive thinking: making decisions, making choices, taking initiatives and being creative. Dr Edward de Bono authored the CoRT (Cognitive Research Trust) thinking programme which is the most widely used programme internationally for the direct teaching of thinking in schools. His methods are now widely used in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Argentina, U.K., Italy, United Arab Emirates, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, The Baltic States, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, India, China, U.S.A, Russia etc. It is compulsory in all schools in Venezuela. In Malta, there is a model showcase for the de Bono Thinking Tools within the National Education Department. In the area of education, he has been invited to address the OECD, the Education Commission of the States, International Council for Gifted Education, ASCD (Association of Supervisors and Curriculum Designers, USA), National Council of Gifted Education (USA) and the education ministries of various countries. Dr de Bono is regularly called upon to address major international conventions. In recognition of his work, the European Creativity Association requested the official naming Committee of the International Astronomical Union (Massachusetts) to name a planet after him and so DE73 became Edebono. In 1991, Dr de Bono arranged for the incorporation of Advanced Practical Thinking Training, Inc.® to publish his training materials and to certify instructors to teach his thinking methods. The APTT® network now spans over 30 countries. In Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Macau, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Taiwan, Dr de Bono is officially represented by Thinking Management Techniques Pte Ltd. Its associate company, Edward de Bono Training Pte Ltd, is the sole distributor of legal de Bono training materials for the region. In 2013, Edward de Bono transferred the rights to his methods and materials to De Bono Global which is now entrusted with perpetuating the work of the guru.
